The drawbacks of concrete include lack of beauty, and long term maintenance costs. The only type of decking that requires more maintenance than concrete is wood. Pavers, bricks, and other stones are the flip side of that coin - pretty, and low maintenance, but initially more costly.
An awning can be either fixed or retractable. A fixed awning, as its name suggests, stays in the same position all the time. It is usually some type of shade cloth fixed to a permanent frame of steel or aluminium. Retractable awnings can be swiftly stowed away, and are available in either powered or manually operated versions. In climates where permanent awnings must be dismantled at the approach of winter and erected again in spring, retractable awnings, which can be left in their cassette all year round, are especially useful.
Over recent years pergolas have become more popular as ornamental additions to the home. As they are free standing ornamental structures with covered roofs supported by 4 column pillars you can use them for shade from the summer heat, sleeping quarters, study area, entertaining guests. Most pergolas are constructed in spacious back gardens. Many pergolas are attached to the outside of the home. Some pergolas can be marquee sized when they are located in mansions.
